When the call came from Janneke offering me the Operations Manager position for Live Well Winona it was like a dream come true. Health, wellness and helping others have always been my life’s biggest passions. But those passions have only been “hobbies” and not part of my professional career. How lucky I am to get up in the morning and come to work doing what I truly love!
As a lifelong “Winona tomboy” I have been pretty active – participating in volleyball, softball and even flag football for many years. But, making some bad choices along life’s way, I found myself to be several pounds over-weight in my mid 20’s. Overweight enough for a friend of mine to give me a coffee cup that says, “I’m not overweight, I’m undertall”. For those of you who know me, I’ve been vertically challenged all my life. Looking back, the best description of me at that time was a fire hydrant.
So after my daughter was born, it occurred to me (dah) that I wanted to be around to see this beautiful little girl grow up!!! Hence the start of “the new me”. Making better food choices and starting an exercise program, became the new normal for me. So much the norm, I was asked by the fitness director if I wanted to lead fitness classes at the Winona YMCA. Yea right, me. The gal who doesn’t like speaking in front of people. The one who says “this girl can’t dance”, to teaching a step class?? Well, teaching step classes, along with water fitness, cardio box, indoor cycling, pilates, and boot camp has become the normal since 1998!
It’s fun to reflect how I turned a fear into a passion. It’s fun to share with people that it is possible to make lifestyle changes. It’s fun to share my story in hopes that it may inspire others to do the same.
It’s now my hope to pull from my past personal and professional experiences and share whatever I can to help Live Well Winona go to the next level. To help our community become a healthier place to live!
In closing, I need to say that I am truly blessed and very proud to be a part of Live Well Winona!
