Payton Borchardt, a 16-year-old student, is committed to making a big change outside of her classroom.
She wants to impact the whole community through her words, actions and engagement as a volunteer.
A sophomore at Winona Senior High School, Borchardt, the February Volunteer of the Month, keeps herself busy as a member of the Youth Action Team, which allows student volunteers to spread awareness about substance abuse prevention in Winona. The Youth Action Team is part of Winona County ASAP, which aims to create a drug-free community.
Even before she joined the team in 2015, Borchardt knew she had to make her voice be heard; in particular, she wanted to be the voice for her family. She was aware of her family’s history of drug use, and wanted to take part in any opportunity she could to make small but significant steps to change that culture.
