For the first time, Robert Bergsrud stood in the doorway of Hy-Vee on Tuesday from the morning into the afternoon, methodically clanking a bell, his cane propped up in a cart. After an interruption from a reporter, a little girl asked him where the “dinging” was, to which Bergsrud replied with a swift ring of his bell, much to the girl’s enjoyment as she walked out the sliding door.
His midday time spent in a walkway of a local grocery store was still better than the alternative, Bergsrud said.
“I have the time, and it’s a good use of my time, rather than sitting at home watching television,” said Bergsrud, who is now retired from a career of truck driving, mowing the greens and fairways at a Florida golf course and owning a tavern.
