Two-and-a-half years ago, Ray Fawcett of Winona wanted to start getting out of the house more often, so he decided to start volunteering at Winona Health at the outpatient registration desk.
He retired in January of 2000, and a little more than five years ago, in 2010, his wife passed away and he was looking for ways to build relationships and connect with the community.
“I wanted a way to stay busy, to get out into the community and interact with people,” Fawcett said.
Today, he’s still volunteering regularly — and being recognized for his work, even if he’s not all that comfortable in the spotlight.
In February Winona Health had its Benevolence and Blues event, a celebration of generosity, honoring people for their service. Fawcett received the “Caring. Sharing. Giving.” honor for his dedication and commitment to the volunteer work.
