Throughout her time in Winona, volunteering to help people has always been at the front of her mind.
Initially from the Twin Cities, Schmit came to Winona State University to study social work. After graduating in 1984, she decided to remain in the community she had grown to love. It was not long before Schmit, who works at Sidecar Advertising Services, found multiple ways to give back.
Schmit is currently the Winhawk Booster Club president, where she helps raise funds for high-school athletics and the various costs that come with keeping a team competitive.
“I started because my kids were really into athletics,” Schmit said. “Then, even after they graduated, I felt like it was still a way that I could give back and help out, and I enjoy doing it.”
Concussion training, money for equipment and transportation, as well as the letters that students work so hard to achieve, all get support by funds from the Winhawk Booster Club.
