“My name is Jackie Larson and since March 2020 I have been sewing fabric face masks by using what I have and what has been donated to me. Masks are made from cotton fabric, bedsheets, and clothing. I’m not charging anything for them. Just making for whoever needs them.”
Q) What drove you to give back to the Winona community?
“I initially wanted to somehow help the essential workers when the shutdown began due to the coronavirus pandemic. Sewing was something I knew how to do, and sewing masks was something I had time to do while staying safe at home. My mask making continued as things opened up again and others needed masks too. It feels good to help.”
Q) How many masks have you made and distributed?
“As of today (October 21), I have given out 4,428 fabric face masks. This is as surprising to me as everyone else. I think I could make them in my sleep!”
Q) How did you come up with the great idea to distribute them safely on your fence?
“Because everyone was being encouraged to do everything we could to stay safe, contactless pick up was best. I only had a few orders in the beginning and it worked out perfectly that I had a fence by my mailbox that I could easily hang them. As more masks were ordered and put on the fence, I eventually started making name tags out of brown paper bags so people would know which masks were theirs.”
Q) How can Winonans help you?
“The community has been very generous with donations of cotton fabric, bedsheets, and clothing as well as thread and elastic. I honestly could not have done it without the community’s help and support. My plan is to keep sewing as long as I have supplies and people need masks, so continued donations are very much appreciated.”
“Another way to help me is to order masks. If not for yourself, maybe for a friend or family member. I make child, teen, adult, and xl adult sizes with elastic around the ears or ties around the head. Fabric choices are whatever I have at the time, more prints than solids, but if you have a favorite color I can do my best to make it for you. Masks are made with a different fabric on each side so you can choose which side you like.”
“If you would like to order a mask, you can message me on Facebook or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I will put you on my list and message or email you when your order is ready and give you instructions on how to pick up.”
